Older Adults

The Institute on Aging's 24-hour toll-free Friendship Line is the only accredited crisis line in the country for people aged 60 years and older and is both a crisis intervention hotline and a warmline (non-urgent calls).

Suicide is an important problem among older adults. Suicide rates are particularly high among older men, with men ages 85 and older having the highest rate of any group in the country.

These fact sheets are brought to you through a joint partnership with the National Council on Aging. Mental Health America collaborates with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) My Medicare Matters campaign in support of our joint goal of assisting older adults to access mental health resources through Medicare.

This guide (from Canada) was designed for family members and other people who provide social support to older adults, including friends, neighbors, and community members. The purpose of this guide is to help you to recognize suicide risk factors and warning signs, and to know what you can do if an older adult in your life is at risk for suicide.
